Who’s Screaming

What was the source of the blood-curdling screams that one man hears late in the night?

Here is a preview of the story.
“But as I was in the middle of doing so, I heard a blood-curdling scream from the right side of the foot of my bed. My eyes flew to the spot of the scream. I saw a girl who looked around seven to nine years old. Her dark hair was in two braids that fell over her shoulders, and she was wearing a white shirt that was covered in blood, and possibly shorts, but I could not see that well. For my eyes were fixed on her face, not on what she wore. I remember quite vividly, her face was a very pale gray, and she did not have pupils. Her eyes were, not completely white, but it seemed as if they were glossed with a shadow of some sort. Not a dark shadow, but I do not know how to describe it. Her eyes were an exceptionally light gray. And her pupils, if she had them, I could not see them because it was too dark to see much of anything. Too scared to scream, I jumped up, and turned my bedside lamp on. Once the light turned on though, she was gone. My heart was slamming against my rib cage, like a rabid animal at the zoo, trying to get out of its cage, and I could not feel my legs.”
