“My father-in-law says that my husband would talk to someone in his room and play with someone. When my father-in-law asked who he was playing with, my husband responded, “the hand.” He assumed it was a typical four-year-old response.
Things could not be ignored anymore when his stepdaughter complained that her room was always cold. She started getting up at night asking to sleep with her mom because her mattress was being pushed off its box spring. She was only 9 or 10 at the time, and my father-in-law did not think she was strong enough to push the mattress by herself. But he thought it might be possible, so he just slept on the couch and let his stepdaughter sleep in his room to calm her down.”
